On many profiles in this directory you will see a Legal 500 ranked badge. The Legal 500 is a long-established, independent guide that researches and ranks law firms in many countries, practice area by practice area.

How the rankings are produced

Directories of this kind typically combine submissions from law firms with interviews and feedback from clients and other lawyers. Researchers then group firms into tiers within each practice area and jurisdiction. Listings are generally refreshed every year.

What a ranking does tell you

  • The firm has a recognised practice in at least one area, in at least one jurisdiction.
  • It has been assessed against its peers by an independent researcher.
  • It has clients willing to speak about its work.

What it doesn't tell you

  • Not every practice area is covered. A firm ranked for banking may not be ranked - or strong - in employment law.
  • Smaller and newer firms are under-represented. Many excellent boutique and individual practices never appear in rankings, especially for private-client work such as family or immigration.
  • It is not a guarantee. A ranking says nothing about who will handle your matter day to day, or about price.

How to use it sensibly

  1. Start from your issue and location: browse practice areas and narrow by city.
  2. Use rankings as one signal among several - alongside languages, ratings and the firm's own description.
  3. Ask the firm which lawyer would work on your matter and whether that team is the one that is ranked.

Ratings vs rankings

Ratings shown on profiles are aggregated from publicly available reviews and reflect clients' experiences. Rankings reflect an editorial assessment, mostly of business-law practices. Both are useful; neither replaces a direct conversation with the firm.
