42 law firms worldwide practising Signature Witnessing & Attestation. Narrow down by city to find a firm near you.
Signature witnessing means a lawyer or notary watches you sign, checks who you are and records that fact on the document. Banks, land registries, pension providers and foreign authorities often refuse papers signed without it. Common examples are deeds of transfer, lasting powers of attorney, loan guarantees, share transfer forms and consent letters.
There is no single standard. Some English deeds need one independent adult witness, while documents bound for civil law countries may need a notary to certify the signature, sometimes followed by an apostille. Attestation can also mean confirming capacity, so the professional may ask questions to check that you understand what you are signing. Remote witnessing by video is accepted in some places for some documents and refused in others.
Most firms charge a fixed fee per signature or per appointment, with extra for home or hospital visits and for checking a foreign form. The work is not litigious, so contingency fees play no part.
Problems come from small details. A missing witness address, a signature dated before the witness was present or ink on the wrong page can void a deed or delay a registration. Some forms also expire if not filed within a set period after signing. Ask before booking whether the firm will read the document first, which ID it needs, whether it can attest signatures for use in another country and whether it can arrange the follow-up certification.
